For years we have wanted a vegetable garden, but because we have so many critters in our backyard we never thought it would really work in this house. This spring, Jeff did some research and found squarefootgardening.com. So for the past few weeks, we have been putting together 2 boxed gardens that we've placed on our back patio. He built them off of the ground so that the animals would have a harder time getting to them, and the added bonus is that there is no bending over involved!
We've got all kinds of things growing in them, but my favorite are the green bean plants Alec started from seeds in Cub Scouts. I'm always amazed how so much can come from one little seed. The kids have really loved checking the garden each day and since these pictures were taken, the veggies have already doubled in size.
Today, Riley crafted some really cute labels that we've added to the garden. I found this idea online somewhere, can't really remember where at the moment.

Really anxious to see the outcome on these ... especially the topsy turvy tomato. Can it dissuade squirrels and birds from going after the mature veggie ?
Is your Topsie Turvie growing out the side??? I'm confused? Mine has exploded! So fun!!! We will have to do this for next year...just tell Jeff that he can make us two planters for next year :)
Good luck. We have a square foot garden here in AZ. In MI it was tough to find enough sunlight and the growing season is so short. Here in AZ we have too much sun and heat. We currently have a beach umbrella shading our garden. Funny.
how fun! You guys are so clever! I love, love those little signs Riley made. It is also great idea for those who live in apartments or have backyards too small for gardening, like mine!! :)
Awesome, can Jeff come out next year and make us some boxes...Aaron just can seem to find the time. Let us know how well they do.
Awesome! What a good idea to raise them up so you don't have to bend over (and so your critters hopefully will leave them alone)
Promise though that if you open your blinds and the deer have figured out how to get up your steps and are eating your sweet basil, that you'll take the best picture ever, k????
Jeff tried to explain to me the square foot garden - it makes perfect sense now that I've seen it.
You are gonna love all the freshness. I grow all my herbs now and love what they add to recipes.
Have fun!
