Festivus 2008

Ok...this is one of the stranger Christmas traditions we have. Every year we have a Festivus party (named after the Seinfeld episode where this was George's Dad's anti-Christmas party -- remember, a FESTIVUS for the REST OF US). At any rate, we've been doing these since before we moved back and its evolved from a Turtle Neck contest to a full blown weird fest.

Here's the gig -- everyone where's the craziest turtleneck they can find. The categories are generally tallest, most girth, pretiest, wierdest, most unconventional, most theatrical, and the highly coveted -- BEST OF SHOW or lifetime achievement award.

Everyone presents their turtlenecks and then the measuring is done in two phases. First, we measure the length from your chin to top of head. Next, we extend the turtleneck over your face ~ or as far as it will go and measure the distance from the top of the turtleneck to the top of your head. We then calculate the difference and divide that by the length of your face to come up with a total coverage percentage. The average turtleneck at our party is about 35-50% facial coverage. We've had a few years with over 100% with artificial extentions. Scott used a pillow case one year at the end of his turtleneck for about 300% coverage.

Over the years, we've added additionaly dimensions. Some cornier than others. Usually we begin the dinner with the airing of grievances and then move to the feats of skill. The turtleneck ceremony starts with a parade of the necks and is MC'd by a red coat (name of a distinguished turtlenecker from pervious years -- so far that is Scott and I). At the end of the event...we have an awards ceremony which is usually followed by speeches.

Here's some pix of this event and I hope you enjoy. Too much more explanation might do one of two things -- scare you completely away....or begging to come to next years!

That has to be one of the funniest traditions I have heard of! The residents that Aaron works with had an "Ugly Holiday Sweater" Party this year. We may have to start that party tradition in our house...it was way fun!
