birthdays & shells

Hannah had a great birthday this year!
She turned a big 14 and had her best friends over to "hang out".

We love Hannah!
She is definitely growing up.
The glasses and braces are gone and
we have enjoyed watching her transition into high school this year.

One of the first papers she had to write for her English class
was a "sensory essay". They had to pick
an object that meant a lot to them and write about it.
(and, no, she didn't write about her yellow blankie!)
Here is her essay:

Shells by the Sea

Everyday is an adventure here. Warm breezes, and hot sand could define it. I listen to the soft sound of the waves, and my blasted ipod, as I lounge at the seaside. If you haven't guessed it yet, I am at Sanibel Island, Florida. It's spring break 2011. I try to soak up as much relaxation as I can before I go back to the prison most people call school.

I open my eyes to what looks like a forest of sea shells. All of different shape, color, and shine. I walk slowly, trying to find the best one. Finally, one catches my attention and I go pick it up. I observed it's smooth but also ragged edges. Quickly, I go and swish it around in the ocean to reveal it's true beauty. I smile and realize that it will be a treasure that I will cherish forever.
