A 5K - My First Race!

On Saturday morning, Jeff and I,
along with Haylie (my 17-year-old cousin visiting from Utah)
ran in the CRIM...

the "Coolest Race In Michigan".

The race was in old downtown Flint and there were thousands of people there, despite the 80% humidity and 85 degree weather! Jeff and Haylie ran the 10 mile race together, and I ran the 5K (3.2 miles). Their race began at 8:00 am and I was able to watch them start and finish, along with the Kenyan man who won the 10 mile race in exactly 47 minutes. Yikes! Jeff finished in roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, and Haylie finished in 1 hour 50 minutes.

My race began at 10:00 am, so Jeff decided to run it with me and "coach" me along the way. I was so glad that he did that, even after running 10 miles! He kept me running at a good pace and reminded me to slow down so I wouldn't waste all my energy. He held my water bottles for me ,"watered" me down every so often, and gave me updates on how far I had gone and how much more I had to go. I felt very spoiled! I ended up finishing the race in 37:41 minutes and met my goal of not stopping once to walk...thanks to my super-duper great husband-for-a-running- coach!

It was a great experience and I can see why Jeff loves running in these races so much. I may start training so I can work up to the 8K next year, even possibly the 10-miler. For now, I'm happy running the little 3-milers here and there...I seriously couldn't have gone another inch after that race! But, as my "coach" reminded me, "just take it one mile at a time. Now work on getting up to 4 miles, then 5, and then, perhaps 26??" I really don't think so.

CONGRATS! You look so cute with your post race glow!

I think 5ks are great! If my knee will cooperate, I'll be out there running them again, too.

Good job Jeff for being so supportive - I think Mike would rather die than run.

That's awesome Amy!! It really does make you feel so good afterwards, doesn't it? Like, you can do anything if you put your mind to it!

And congrats to Jeff on the 10-miler! It probably felt like a good old fashioned training run for him at this point. I know what you mean about 26 miles...it's like not really that appealing to me either. Although I understand why some people do it.

Hey maybe we can all do some miles together at the sister's reunion!?!

I'm right there on the sidewalk, sitting in my lawn-chair, sipping my sugar-free Diet Rite Tangerine, waving my "Go Amy Go !' sign. You can count on me !

How fun! Good for you!!!!!
Three cheers for coach Jeff! I'm hoping we can hang together in our race for a little while too so I can benefit from his experience.

Very Cool!! I'm proud of you. I just bought a jogging stroller so I can try to get the running bug. Maybe someday you can read about my 5K...?
