Because They Say So

Last Thursday afternoon I had some letters to mail in Milford before the Post Office closed at 5:00. It was a beautiful, sunny day and I told the boys that if they came with me we'd go to Milford Park after and play for a little bit. They agreed and I told them to bundle up because it was only 25 degrees out. Yup. That wasn't a typo.

So we set off and headed for Milford. The letters were mailed, we drove to the park, parked the suburban, and the boys ran for their very favorite park. I'm sure they had visions of curly slides, balance beams, wiggly bridges, and zip lines. But those dreams were quickly shattered when we came across this sign I had never seen before in our 7 years of living here in Michigan.

The boy's mood quickly changed and they WERE NOT happy, especially Ian who was down right mad! "Why is it cloooosed?!?", they asked. "Because they said so," was my response. "Who said so?" asked Alec. "I don't know - the police, city council," I answered. Who knows?? Is what I was really thinking. Why can't we come play on a sunny day? So what if it's cold out? My big question was - when IS the SEASON going to be over? In Michigan, it could be May for all I know. Anyhow, because they said so, we didn't get to play.

Being the good mother that I am, I suggested we go to the other side of the park, which wasn't chained shut, to swing...Great idea, Mom!

Whoops! Looks like the WEEK of rain left some huge puddles.
Sorry, guys. Let's go try the free standing slide.

I just love how they put their full faith in their mother. Fun is just around the corner, boys!!

Hmmm...maybe not. Well, it's always fun to sit and watch the water.
Maybe we'll see some ducks or birds...Okay, Mom!!

Look how high the river is! Standing is always good, too. Let's go check out the bridge.
Maybe we'll see some fish.

When we got to the bridge, we saw an otter nibbling on something and we snuck up to it. It saw us and took off down the river, so we chased it for a while until we couldn't find it any more.

We went on a little nature hunt to look for signs of spring - ANY SIGN, PLEASE! - before heading back home. We saw a robin, sunshine, goose poop, the otter, and some swans. I guess the most important sign, according to the boys, will be the one they take down in a few weeks so we can play at the park!

Did you ever read that Frog and Toad story called "Spring is just around the Corner" ? Such a cute rendition of the age-old question ! I think it is in Frog and Toad through the Year.

Today, though, non-Michiganders, it was 59 degrees !
We're getting out the grill !!!

Funny you mentioned that book - it was Alec's take-home book this week and we did read the story "Just Around the Corner." Very cute and appropriate for this time of year!

I've been enjoying the 70's for a week now visiting my sister. :) Dax has been going to parks and swinging in swings and we've even been HOT wearing shorts & t-shirts! (although the people who live here didn't think 77 was hot).

My plan is to bring spring back with me when I return to Michigan in another week. Do you think it will fit in my trunk?
